Gatekeeper

Gatekeeper:
Intelligent control and command of the network.

Built with an open architecture, EnergyAxis provides application integration across multiple utility systems, opening the path for seamless business information transactions. Installing residential and commercial endpoint electricity devices along with the gatekeeper builds the advanced metering infrastructure for the EnergyAxis controlled mesh network.

Our proven RF network is managed by powerful gatekeeper technology. EnergyAxis offers a choice of meter-based or non-meter gatekeepers, so deploying an EnergyAxis network is simple and flexible. Meter gatekeepers perform a dual function in the network: acting both as a smart meter endpoint and as a network gatekeeper for a group of network elements. Non-meter units offer gatekeeper functionality with the added options of battery back-up or solar powering for convenient deployment.

The simplicity of the EnergyAxis System gives you the flexibility to install the gatekeeper anywhere you would install a meter or at a non-meter location should you choose.

The gatekeeper provides the added functionality of managing, collecting and transmitting data from thousands of meters within the sub-network. Unlike some competing systems, there is no requirement for costly and time-consuming infrastructure upgrades.

Within EnergyAxis, the gatekeeper is the interface between the EnergyAxis Management System (EA_MS) and the network elements such as electricity meters, gas meters, water meters, grid sensors or grid controllers. To function as a gatekeeper, the devices are supplied with an EA_Gatekeeper module—an internal LAN network interface card (NIC) with two-way 900 MHz communications capability as well as a WAN interface card (WIC) for connection to a WAN. The non-meter gatekeeper provides a wide range WAN connectivity and power options while the meter-based gatekeeper supports selected WAN technologies under the meter cover.

The gatekeeper is designed to work with a wide variety of public and private communications networks. Communications options include modems for many IP-based networks. Gatekeepers have been deployed using such varied WAN solutions as 1xRTT, EvDO, GPRS, GSM, satellite, fiber optics, WiFi, Ethernet, private RF and PSTN. This flexibility allows utilities to deploy systems with confidence that they will be able to migrate in the future to other WAN technologies.
